What Is OCR, and When Do You Need It?

Scans are just pictures
When you scan a document or photograph a page, the resulting PDF is an image — the text isn't really "text" your computer can read, select, or convert. It's a picture of text.
OCR (Optical Character Recognition) analyzes that image and turns it into actual, editable, searchable text.
When you need it
If you want to convert a scanned PDF to Word or Excel, search inside a scanned document, or copy text from a photo of a page, you need a converter with OCR. Converting a scan without OCR just gives you an uneditable image inside a new file.
OCR quality varies a lot between tools, especially on low-quality scans and complex layouts — so we test it specifically.
