Your file goes to a server
With most free online converters, your document is uploaded to the provider's servers, processed there, and then made available for download. For everyday, non-sensitive files that's usually fine.
For confidential material — contracts, medical records, financial statements — it introduces real risk, depending on how the provider handles and retains your data.
How to stay safe
Look for converters that use encrypted (HTTPS) connections, clearly state that files are deleted shortly after processing, and ideally offer local/desktop processing so files never leave your computer. We weigh these factors in our security scoring.
